Lime Green Exhibit

The Raven Mavens' latest challenge was to create a piece using lime green somewhere in the work.  We could use as much or little as we wanted.   Each piece is 12" x 24" mounted on canvas.  These will be on exhibit at the Art Center Members's Show in Grand Junction, CO the month of February.

A Raven's View

Our latest theme is A Raven's View.  We each interpreted this theme into a 6" x 18" piece, then mounted them on board.  These pieces are currently on  display and available for purchase at the Art Center in Grand Junction, Colorado during  July and August.  If you're in the area stop in and take a look!  We have several creative projects in the works, so check back often!

CHAINS, REBAR, SCREWS =ART?

Yes, these items can be used to make great fabric.
You just have to rust them with some vinegar, salt and water.
Then they need to be wrapped tight and let set until
you get the amount of rust that you desired.
This type of rusting gives you unexpected results.
The last post showed a more controlled type of rusting.

On the right side of this piece of fabric you can see
the results of wrapping the fabric around the
large chain in the first picture.
The other rusted spots are the result of placing
other rusted items on the fabric as well as some
of the rust that has fallen off the metal objects.
What can one do with this?
In the past I have dyed the fabric a georgeous
turquoise and made it into small purses.
Unfortunately, they were given away before being photographed.
Sometimes you can see pictures in the rusted areas
( like looking at pictures in clouds) and enhance them
with stitching.
But, I think that the most fun is in the doing.
I love to experiment with different surface designs
to see what can be created.
The one thing that it is important to understand
when using rusted fabric is that it is not archival.
The rusting could continue slowly over time.
I hope that you have enjoyed our little adventure into
rusting fabric.

A New Blog!

The Raven Mavens agreed that it would be fun to start a blog to keep track of our challenges and photos.  We'll be adding photos of challenges and design exercises as they occur.

Our first challenge was a Chinese Whispers Challenge.  This was a fun project for the entire group!  It started with a photo that one of the members had taken.  The first person used the picture to create a quilt interpreting the photo as she wished.  She passed her finished quilt to the second person, and they created a quilt interpreting what they wanted from the first quilt.  It continued until the last person on the list has finished a quilt.  The big "reveal" was very exciting, and it was amazing how the subject changed from the first to last quilt.  Below is a picture of the finished pieces.

We had so much fun with this challenge that we decided to do a second one.  We'll post photos of this one as soon as they are available.
